Honouring God With Your Body: What It Really Means to Be His Temple

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]? You were bought with a price [you were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made His own]. So then, honor and glorify God with your body.”

– 1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭-

Recently, during a powerful Bible Study based on healing, I was struck by a thought that stayed with me long after the conversation ended: What does it truly mean to glorify and honour God with your body?

It’s a phrase many of us have heard in church, often quoted from 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, but when I paused to reflect, I realised I had never fully understood its depth. If my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, then every choice I make, how I care for myself, how I live, how I present myself to the world carries weight. This revelation stirred both conviction and curiosity in me.

In this post, I want to share what I’ve been learning about honouring God with our bodies and practical ways we can live out this truth daily.

Here are some practical, biblical ways to glorify and honour God with your body:

1. Purity and Holiness.

The Bible tells us to avoid sexual immorality.

“Run away from sexual immorality [in any form, whether thought or behavior, whether visual or written]. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the one who is sexually immoral sins against his own body.”

– ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭18‬ ‭-

God created your body to reflect His glory, not to be used for sin. Honouring Him means living with purity, in both your thoughts and your actions.

Part of this is being intentional about what you let into your mind and how you live, making sure your eyes, thoughts, and choices reflect His ways.

2. Self-care and Stewardship.

Taking care of your body is about honouring it as God’s temple. This means getting enough rest, eating healthy food, staying active, and avoiding anything that could harm you.

“She equips herself with strength [spiritual, mental, and physical fitness for her God-given task] And makes her arms strong.”

– Proverbs‬ ‭31‬:‭17‬ ‭-

‭‭When you nurture your health, you’re communicating to God that you value the body He has entrusted to you.

3. Modesty and Presentation.

Dress in a way that reflects your dignity and shows respect for yourself, while also expressing who you are in Christ.

“Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves modestly and appropriately and discreetly in proper clothing, not with [elaborately] braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but instead adorned by good deeds [helping others], as is proper for women who profess to worship God.”

– 1 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭-

‭‭This is not necessarily following a set of strict rules, however I believe that we do have to communicate that we belong to God through how we present ourselves.

4. Serving with Your Body.

Use your physical strength and energy to serve others, whether through work, helping those in need, or simply being present.

“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship.”

– Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬ –

‭‭Remember that every act of kindness, and every sacrifice of your time or energy is worship.

5. Worship and Surrender.

Following on from the above, God’s desire for you is to offer your whole self in worship.

“So will I bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.”

– Psalms‬ ‭63‬:‭4‬ ‭-

‭‭Romans 12:1 says that we should offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is our true and proper worship.

6. Avoiding Idolatry of the Body.

Whilst it is imperative to honour your body, you must be careful not to idolise it. This is something that I have personally struggled with where I was striving for my body to be perfect. However, I have come to learn that beauty, fitness, or appearance shouldn’t take the place of devotion to God.

“Your adornment must not be merely external—with interweaving and elaborate knotting of the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or [being superficially preoccupied with] dressing in expensive clothes; but let it be [the inner beauty of] the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, [one that is calm and self-controlled, not overanxious, but serene and spiritually mature] which is very precious in the sight of God.”

– 1 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭-

‭‭It is wise to care of your body, but don’t forget to nurture your spirit. Balance is everything.

Final Thoughts:

You honour God with your body by keeping it pure, caring for it, presenting it with dignity, using it to serve others, and offering it to Him in worship and daily surrender.

Take a moment to reflect on how your daily habits, what you eat, how you move, and the way you speak to yourself show reverence for the body God has given you. Every choice is an opportunity to honour Him.

This week, choose one intentional way to care for your body that also nurtures your spirit, whether it’s enjoying wholesome, nourishing food, setting aside time for exercise, or serving someone in need. Let your body become a living expression of your faith.

I’d love for you to share in the comments how you’re honouring your body this week, and share this post to encourage someone else to do the same!

Stay Blessed and Encouraged,

Nkechi
