“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
– Hebrews 11:1
Fear often stands in direct opposition to faith. When we allow fear to dominate, it distorts our perception of reality, making it incredibly challenging to trust God and remain hopeful. Faith and fear cannot coexist in the same space because fear undermines the assurance and confidence that faith provides.
Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we cannot see. It calls us to trust in God’s promises, even when the outcome isn’t visible.
I can personally relate to the struggle between faith and fear, especially during challenging seasons of waiting or trials. It’s natural to wrestle with doubts when the path ahead seems uncertain or when the breakthrough feels delayed. However, fear denies the hope that God will take care of us. That’s why we must intentionally cultivate and exercise our faith.
Learning Faith in Life’s Storms
In the Gospel of Matthew, we read about the disciples facing a literal storm while in a boat with Jesus (Matthew 8:23-27). The storm caused the disciples to panic and fear for their lives. Despite their fear, Jesus remained calm, asleep in the boat. When they woke Him, He didn’t react with fear or anxiety. Instead, He rebuked the wind and calmed the sea, but He also questioned their lack of faith.
This story is a powerful reminder for us. How often do we face “storms” in our lives, moments of uncertainty, challenges, or fear and fail to trust that God is in control? One of the most striking aspects of this story is Jesus’ calm demeanour. Even in the face of chaos, He trusted God fully. If Jesus could rest peacefully in the storm, so can we, knowing that God is in control and will bring us through.
Faith Over Fear
I love Joyce Meyer’s quote: “The next time fear knocks on your door, answer with faith.” This resonates deeply because it reminds us to actively work on building our faith. But how do we do that?
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
– Romans 10:17
Faith grows when we immerse ourselves in God’s Word and spend time in His presence. The more we meditate on Scripture, the more our minds are filled with truth, leaving no room for fear. I recently read The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, and one of his recommendations is to meditate on scriptures related to faith. This practice helps embed God’s promises into our hearts and minds, transforming the way we think and respond to fear.
Faith in Action
“Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
– James 2:17
Faith requires action. It is not enough to just believe in God’s promises; we must step out in faith and live as though we truly trust Him. In day 1 of this devotional I spoke about not doing well in my education. Looking back, I realise that if I hadn’t taken the first step toward pursuing my career goals despite unfavorable circumstances, my life would look very different today.
God has already declared us overcomers and conquerors (Romans 8:37). It’s time we live like it. Whatever dream, goal, or change you’re pursuing, take the first step in faith. Whether it’s starting a business, pursuing a career, or waiting for healing, act in faith. Thank God now for the breakthrough you’re trusting Him for. Praise Him even before you see the outcome. This is where faith is born and strengthened.
Trusting God Through It All
Remember, storms don’t last forever. God works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). You don’t need to live in fear, just believe, as Jesus says in Luke 8:50.
Be still. Trust God. Let your faith grow stronger than your fear. When fear knocks, answer with faith, knowing that God is with you through every storm and will bring you to a place of peace and victory.
Stay blessed and encouraged,
Nkechi

This is so, so encouraging, and really brings home how fear by its nature derails our faith in God and a powerful reminder we have nothing to fear if we build on our faith in God by reading His word and spending time with Him. I’m very encouraged

Thank you so much for your kind words Ogechi! I’m so glad this message encouraged you. Fear can be powerful, but God’s love and truth are always greater. Keep building your faith through His Word and time in His presence. He is always with you! God bless you!
Thank you for this! I have been derailed by fear so many times! And now to choose trust and faith!!!!
I believe it is the opposite of love, not hate. God will let you know when to walk away from something or someone. Confessing that we are righteous in Him alone will activate Isaiah 54:17 – No weapon! It certainly is a timely study.
