Invest in Rest

In today’s fast-paced world, we juggle endless responsibilities that can range from; our careers, businesses, family, friendships, social commitments, ministry, and maintaining a home. Life can often feel like an exhausting marathon filled with never-ending to-do lists and meticulous planning. But what happens when the list no longer works? What if true productivity isn’t found in doing more, but in embracing balance and rest?

This is something God has been impressing on my heart lately.

Like many, I often find myself rushing. Rushing through my morning devotions, rushing breakfast before work, and speed-walking from the car park to the office. Every moment feels like a race against time, yet I still struggle to fit everything in.

There’s a powerful quote that says:

“Don’t confuse activity with productivity. Many people are simply busy being busy.”

Have you ever felt that way? Or perhaps you’re in that place now? The truth is, productivity and rest must go hand in hand. Rest is necessary for our overall wellbeing. Without it, our ability to thrive; spiritually, mentally, and physically diminishes.

The Oxford Dictionary defines rest as:

“To cease work or movement in order to relax, sleep, or recover strength.”

Rest isn’t just a human need, it’s a divine principle.

God’s Design for Rest.

God Modelled Rest.

“And by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested (ceased) on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.”

– Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬ ‭-

God rested after His work was complete. He didn’t rest because He was weary, but to set an example, showing us that rest is a sacred part of how we’re meant to live.

Jesus Prioritised Rest.

Even Jesus, during His earthly ministry, made intentional time to step away from the demands around Him to rest and pray.

“He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a little while”—for there were many [people who were continually] coming and going, and they could not even find time to eat.”

– Mark‬ ‭6‬:‭31‬ –

Jesus recognised the importance of pausing, not just for physical rest, but to reconnect with the Father and renew His strength.

“Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left [the house], and went out to a secluded place, and was praying there.”

– Mark‬ ‭1‬:‭35‬ ‭-

If Jesus, the Son of God, who carried the weight of the world, took time to rest and be alone with the Father, how much more do we need to do the same?

God Invites Us Into His Rest.

God’s invitation into His rest is one of the most tender and powerful expressions of His love. Jesus says:

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls.”

– Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭28‬-‭29‬ ‭-

He’s inviting us to draw near, to lay down our burdens, and to find peace in His presence. When we bring our burdens to Christ, we exchange our exhaustion for His peace.

The Power of Rest: Avoiding Burnout and Living a Fulfilling Life.

Incorporating rest into our lives isn’t just about taking a break; it involves living in alignment with God’s design. Rest:

• Prevents burnout and stress.

• Strengthens our relationship with God.

• Enhances clarity, creativity, and productivity.

• Refreshes our souls and bodies.

Here are four intentional, biblically grounded ways to cultivate rest in your everyday walk with Christ:

1. Establish a Healthy Routine – Prioritise Quiet Time with God Daily.

When we start our days with God, before the noise, emails, and responsibilities, our hearts are grounded in peace rather than pulled away by pressure. A healthy routine isn’t about perfection; it’s about prioritising His presence.

“In the morning, O Lord, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will prepare [a prayer and a sacrifice] for You and watch and wait [for You to speak to my heart].” ‭

– Psalms‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬ –

Whether it’s prayer, Scripture reading, journaling, or stillness, building quiet time into your daily life invites rest into your soul. It’s a daily reminder that you don’t have to carry life’s demands alone. God goes before you.

2. Practice Sabbath Rest – Step Away from Work and Responsibilities.

When we rest, we’re declaring, “God, I trust You to sustain me.” Stepping away from work, emails, errands, or even social media reminds us that our worth isn’t in what we do, but in who we are. God’s beloved.

“Remember the Sabbath (seventh) day to keep it holy (set apart, dedicated to God). Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath [a day of rest dedicated] to the Lord your God…”

– Exodus 20:8-10 –

Use this time to delight in God’s presence, enjoy His creation, and refresh your soul.

3. Unplug and Retreat – Sometimes, a Change of Scenery or Digital Detox Can Restore Energy.

I personally love to travel when I need to reset. New places have a way of revealing new perspectives for me. There’s something sacred about stepping away. Whether it’s a short walk in nature, a weekend away, or even turning your phone off for an evening. Changing your environment can create space for God to speak.

“He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. He refreshes and restores my soul (life)…”

– Psalms‬ ‭23‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ –

Sometimes, it’s in the silence that we hear God most clearly.

4. Rest in God’s Presence – Meditate on His Word, Worship, and Lay Down Your Burdens.

True rest comes when you pause, spend time with God, and hand over the worries, fears, and pressures you’ve been holding onto. In His presence, you’ll find calm, clarity, and comfort that no break or holiday can give.

“And the Lord said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest [by bringing you and the people into the promised land].”

– Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭14‬ ‭-

His presence is our ultimate place of peace. When the world feels loud and heavy, draw near to Him. Pour out your heart in worship. Meditate on His promises. And let His stillness wash over you.

Final Thoughts.

As we pursue our callings, build businesses, nurture others, or navigate seasons of waiting, rest reminds us that we don’t have to carry it all. God is with us, leading, refreshing, and restoring every step of the way.
