“Therefore, since we have these [great and wonderful] promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, completing holiness [living a consecrated life—a life set apart for God’s purpose] in the fear of God.”
– 2 Corinthians 7:1
Lately, I’ve been reflecting deeply on what it means to be set apart, sanctified, and consecrated to God. This reflection was sparked by a devotional on the YouVersion Bible App titled “Being Sanctified is a Glorious Process” by Annie David. In the busyness of daily life, it’s easy to forget that God has called us to live differently, to live set apart. This means that we are not ordinary.
Set Apart: Chosen for Purpose
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a [special] people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies [the wonderful deeds and virtues and perfections] of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
– 1 Peter 2:9
To be set apart means God didn’t just stumble upon you. Your existence is not random. God picked you. Yes you! He separated and chose you for Himself. He looked at your story, despite the mess and said, “Yes, I want her.”
It explains why some things just don’t sit right in your spirit. Why you feel uncomfortable in certain circles. Why the doors others walk through easily seem to stay shut for you. You were never meant to blend in. You were created for something greater, something sacred.
Consecrated: Surrendered to God’s Hands
Consecration is personal, it’s knowing you’re chosen by God and it is choosing Him in return. It’s saying, “God, this life, this body, this business, this heart… it’s all Yours.”
Defined in the Oxford Dictionary as “the action of making something sacred,” consecration applies to us too. It’s giving God our first, not our leftovers. It is a daily act of surrender and sacred exchange.
“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship.”
– Romans 12:1
Sanctified: Being Made Holy, Daily
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [that is, separate you from profane and vulgar things, make you pure and whole and undamaged—consecrated to Him—set apart for His purpose]; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete and [be found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
– 1 Thessalonians 5:23
Sanctification is a journey of inner transformation. It is not linear, it is a process. Sometimes making the decision to be sanctified can feel like pruning, refining, or healing. Sometimes, it feels painful, however it is purposeful. It is God through His grace making us more like Jesus, from the inside out.
“For this is the will of God, that you be sanctified [separated and set apart from sin]…”
– 1 Thessalonians 4:3
Sanctification shows up in the choices no one sees. The boundaries we set. The purity we protect. The voices we stop listening to. It’s quiet, but powerful. Sanctification ultimately leads to eternal life.
“But now since you have been set free from sin and have become [willing] slaves to God, you have your benefit, resulting in sanctification [being made holy and set apart for God’s purpose], and the outcome [of this] is eternal life.”
– Romans 6:22
The Call Is Costly, But It Is Worth It
Let’s be real. Being set apart isn’t always easy. It can feel like isolation, or like loss. But God doesn’t call us apart to leave us empty, He calls us apart so that He can fill us and use us according to His purpose.
How to Walk in Sanctification and Consecration
1. Surrender Completely to God
Offer your life, will, desires, and plans to God. True consecration starts with a heart fully yielded to Him.
“Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].”
- Proverbs 3:5-6
2. Accept Christ’s Work of Sanctification
Sanctification begins with accepting Jesus as Savior. Through His blood, you are cleansed and made righteous.
“And in accordance with this will [of God] we [who believe in the message of salvation] have been sanctified [that is, set apart as holy for God and His purposes] through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) once for all.”
- Hebrews 10:10
3. Walk Daily with the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit will continue the work of sanctification in you. Invite Him to guide, convict, and empower you to live righteously.
“But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts].”
– Galatians 5:16
4. Renew Your Mind Through the Word of God
Allow God’s Word to purify and align your thoughts and desires with His.
“And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].”
– Romans 12:2
5. Live a Life of Holiness and Obedience
Choose to live according to God’s standards not the world’s. This calling affects not just your lifestyle, but your character.
“But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves in all your conduct [be set apart from the world by your godly character and moral courage]; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy (set apart), for I am holy.’”
- 1 Peter 1:15-16
6. Practice Spiritual Disciplines
Pray regularly, worship, fast, serve others, and fellowship with believers. These practices help keep your heart soft, attentive, and devoted to God.
“Rejoice always and delight in your faith; be unceasing and persistent in prayer; in every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
7. Pursue Purity and Integrity
Consecration involves moral and spiritual purity. Guard your heart, eyes, and relationships.
“Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things [which are dishonorable—disobedient, sinful], he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified [set apart for a special purpose and], useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.”
– 2 Timothy 2:21
8. Stay Humble and Repentant
Sanctification is a process. When you fall, repent quickly and draw near to God again.
“If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose].”
1 John 1:9
Final Thoughts
So, if you’ve ever questioned why your road looks different, why the refining feels painful, or why you just don’t fit in, remember: You are set apart, consecrated, and sanctified.
I don’t know where you are right now in your walk with God, but I do know this: He’s calling you closer. He’s inviting you to live differently, not for perfection’s sake, but for purpose.
I’d love to hear from you, what stood out to you in this post? Have you felt God calling you to be set apart in certain areas of your life? Let’s start a conversation in the comments. Your story might encourage someone else too.
Stay blessed and encouraged,
Nkechi
