What It Truly Means to Be a Child of God

Towards the end of last year, while reading a devotional, I came across a question that caused me to pause and reflect: Do you fully understand what it means to be a child of God?

I wrote down my initial thoughts in my journal, but as I spent more time praying, studying Scripture, and reflecting, I realised how foundational this question truly is. It led me to think deeply about how vital it is for us, as God’s daughters, to fully understand our identity in Him.

So often, we walk through life striving, questioning our worth, or seeking validation in places that were never meant to define us. Yet when we truly grasp what it means to be a child of God, it changes how we see ourselves, how we love, how we heal, and how we live.

This is why I wanted to begin the new year with this topic, to set the tone for a year rooted in identity, wholeness, and walking confidently in everything God desires for us. My prayer is that this reflection encourages us to move beyond surface-level understanding and into a deeper revelation of who we are in Him, so we can live from a place of security, purpose, and freedom.

To be a child of God in the Bible describes a new identity, relationship, and way of living that comes from being brought into God’s family through Christ.

What It Truly Means to Be a Child of God

1. Salvation Through Faith in Christ

Being a child of God begins with faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation is not earned by works, but received through trusting Him as Lord and Saviour. It is by this faith that we are brought into God’s family and receive the gift of eternal life.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

– Ephesians 2:8-9

Salvation is the foundation of your identity as God’s child.

2. You are Chosen and Adopted By God 

To be a child of God means you belong to Him by adoption. Through faith in Jesus Christ, you are welcomed into God’s family and given a new identity rooted in relationship. 

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

– John‬ ‭1‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭

This adoption is intimate and secure, as confirmed in Romans 8:15, which says “You received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’”

3. You Have a New Identity 

When you receive Christ, you are no longer defined by your past, your failures, or the labels the world has given you. In Him, you are made new, a beloved child of God with a secure place in His family.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

– 2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬

Your worth, purpose, and identity are now defined by God. 1 John 3:1 says: “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God.” This means that you are chosen, loved, and secure as His child.

4. Being Transformed into Christ’s Likeness

As a child of God, you carry His nature and are being gradually shaped to reflect Christ. This transformation is not instant perfection, but a lifelong process in which your desires, character, and life are increasingly aligned with Him.

“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

– Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭29‬ ‭‬‬

God is continuously at work in you, molding you into the likeness of His Son, guiding you toward maturity and a life that reflects His character.

5. You Inherit God’s Promises

As a child of God, you don’t just have access to the Father; you also inherit all that He has promised. Through Christ, His blessings, guidance, and provision are yours, both in this life and for eternity. Being an heir means participating in God’s plan, trusting that every promise He has made will come to pass.

“and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”

– Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭17‬ ‭

6. You Are Fully Forgiven and Restored

To be a child of God is to live under grace, not condemnation. Through Christ, your sins are forgiven and your past no longer defines you. 

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”

– ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭7

God removes guilt and shame completely: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12). “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

7. Walking in Obedience and Surrender

Being a child of God means responding to His guidance with a heart of obedience and surrender. It is trusting His plans, yielding your will to His, and walking in faith, knowing that He knows what is best for you. Obedience flows from love, gratitude, and a relationship with the Father.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

– Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭21

True freedom and growth come when you surrender to God and follow His guidance with faith, trusting that His ways are higher than yours.

8. You Are Led by the Holy Spirit

As God’s child, you are not left to navigate life on your own. The Holy Spirit guides, convicts, and empowers you, helping you make decisions, grow in Christlikeness, and live according to God’s will.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

– Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭14‬ ‭

9. Loving God and Loving Others 

And last but not least, you are called to love God and others.

As a child of God, your life flows from love, first for God and then for those around you. Loving God is reflected in worship, obedience, and surrender, while loving others demonstrates the heart of God through compassion, forgiveness, and service. This is the greatest calling and the clearest proof that you belong to Him.

“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.””

‭- Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭37‬-‭40

Your love for God and others is both the evidence of your identity as His child and the means by which His kingdom is reflected in the world.

Final Thoughts

As we begin this year, my prayer is that we don’t just know these truths intellectually, but that we allow them to settle deep in our hearts. When we truly live as daughters of God, everything shifts, how we see ourselves, how we respond to life, and how we walk forward in faith.
