Allowing God to Order Your Steps

Every year, I like to choose a theme to guide my focus for the year. As I entered this year, I reflected on what I wanted to achieve and where I wanted to grow. Looking back at the previous year, which was centred on putting God first, I realised just how much He had moved in my life. I began to hear His voice more clearly and understood that I had no choice but to depend on Him.

This year, I chose the theme: “My Steps Are Ordered by God”, as I want Him to continue the momentum of last year and guide every step of my journey.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.”

– Psalm 37:23

One of the Oxford Dictionary definitions of order is a state in which everything is in its correct or appropriate place. This resonates with me deeply as it means that God positions every aspect of my life exactly where it should be.

Many times, I have found myself heading in one direction, trying to achieve something, only for God to gently guide me another way. His guidance may come through dreams, visions, His still, small voice, or a prophetic word, but I can rest assured that He will always lead me to where I need to be.

“A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.”

– Proverbs 16:9

Proverbs 16:9 reminds me that while God honours our ability to plan, He is the one who ultimately governs the outcome and the timing. Even when it feels like you’re walking alone, you’re not. He is gently guiding every step of your path.

Trusting God’s timing is part of this journey, something He continually reminds me of. There are things we desire now and promises we’ve received that have not yet come to fruition, but God has a perfect time for all things to come to pass.

Beautiful Alignment

God wants to order our steps so that our lives align with His perfect will. There is a unique beauty in walking in alignment with God’s plan. The more I pray for Him to align my heart, mind, desires, and life with His will, the more I can hear His voice and discern His direction.

Recently, while reading the book of Job, this verse stood out to me:

“For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such things are with Him.”

– Job 23:14

Despite his suffering, Job recognised that God had a sovereign purpose already set in motion. God’s will is always accomplished at the appointed time. By chapter 42, God restored everything Job had lost and you can be confident that He will do the same for you. You only need to hold on.

Walking In Surrender

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust God fully, to not rely only on our own understanding, and to acknowledge Him in everything we do.

This means releasing the need to control outcomes and trusting that God sees what we cannot. Surrender is not passivity; it is an active choice to place our plans, desires, and timelines in God’s hands. Obedience becomes a daily response where we can choose to follow His leading even when the path feels uncertain or slower than expected.

God often directs us through subtle nudges, closed doors, delayed answers, or a quiet sense of peace. Walking with Him requires humility, attentiveness, and willingness to adjust when He redirects us.

We can trust God’s character. He is faithful, loving, and intentional. Knowing this allows us to rest in His guidance. As we walk in obedience, our faith is deepened, our character is shaped, and we are prepared for what lies ahead. Ultimately, allowing God to direct our steps means trusting that His way, His timing, and His purpose are better than our own, and that every step leads us exactly where we need to be.

How to Allow God to Order Your Steps

1. Surrender Your Plans to God Daily

Allowing God to order your steps begins with surrender. It is the intentional act of placing your desires, timelines, and expectations before Him, not just once, but continually. Surrender is an act of trust, acknowledging that God’s wisdom exceeds our own and that His plans are ultimately for our good.

“Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.”

– Psalm 37:5

When we commit our way to God, we invite Him to take the lead, even when the journey looks different from what we imagined.

2. Trust God Beyond Your Own Understanding

One of the biggest barriers to allowing God to direct our steps is relying too heavily on our own logic and understanding. Trusting God requires letting go of the need to understand every detail and believing that He is working behind the scenes, even when things feel unclear or delayed.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

– Proverbs 3:5–6

To acknowledge God in all our ways is to invite Him into every decision, no matter how small, and let Him lead the direction of our lives.

3. Walk in Obedience to What God Has Already Revealed

God often directs us one step at a time.

In Genesis 12:1 God told Abraham to go to a land He would show him. The direction came after obedience, not before. Obedience to what God has already shown us opens the door for further guidance. Waiting for complete clarity before moving can keep us stuck, but obedience, even in small things positions us to hear God more clearly.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.”

– Psalm 119:105

This verse reminds us that God’s Word doesn’t always reveal the entire journey at once. Instead, it lights the next step, guiding us as we walk in obedience. As we follow, He continues to illuminate the way forward.

4. Remain Attentive to God’s Gentle Leading

God often directs our steps through peace, conviction, closed doors, and quiet confirmations — sometimes through signs, visions, or dreams. Learning to discern His voice requires stillness, prayer, and a sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,‘This is the way, walk in it.’”

– Isaiah 30:21

When we slow down and listen, we become more aware of God’s direction and more willing to adjust when He redirects us.

Final Thoughts

Allowing God to guide your steps isn’t about being perfect,  it’s about your heart posture. A surrendered heart, a trusting spirit, and a willingness to obey will always place you in alignment with God’s purpose. Even when the path feels uncertain, you can be confident that God is faithfully directing each step.

I’d love to hear from you: Where do you sense God is directing you right now? Take a moment to reflect and share in the comments, your journey could encourage someone else walking a similar path.

Stay Blessed and Encouraged,

Nkechi xoxo

  1. This is a timely reminder to not only allow God to order our steps, but even in the small and simple instructions, to be ready to surrender our plans for His, and trust Him throughout the entire journey. Number 3 of walking in obedience to What God has already revealed is such a beautiful season to be in. God does not need to reveal the entire picture to us; we have to instead, trust Him for all He is doing and what He will do. Even in the silent seasons; He is working it all out for our good and for His Glory.

Thank you for this excellent written piece and God continue to fill you with ample wisdom to bless your generation xx
