One question that God has been gently asking me recently is this: Can I trust Him when life is not going the way I hoped?
This reflection has come from a place of personal experience. Learning to trust God when hope feels deferred hasn’t been easy. Over the past few years, I have received prophetic words, had dreams that strengthened my faith, and held onto promises I believed God had given me. Like many of us, I have prayed, hoped, waited, and at times wrestled with why certain things were taking longer than I expected.
One thing God has been teaching me is that my trust cannot be anchored in timelines or outcomes, but in who He is. I have found that God’s character never changes, even when my circumstances do. Waiting does not mean God has forgotten me, and delay does not mean His promises have failed.
This journey has reminded me that waiting is a place where God often does some of His deepest work in us. The Bible tells us, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12). If we are honest, many of us know what it feels like for our hearts to become weary through waiting. It is easy to trust God when prayers are answered quickly, doors are opening, and circumstances seem to confirm His promises. But what about the seasons of waiting? What about when you are longing for marriage, faithfully pursuing your God-given purpose while trusting God for breakthrough, believing for healing, or holding onto promises that seem delayed? Can you still choose to trust Him even when you do not understand what He is doing?
What Does It Mean to Trust God?
The Oxford Dictionary defines trust as “a firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something.” By that definition, trusting God means having a firm confidence in His character, His faithfulness, and His ability to fulfil every promise He has made. This is exactly what Proverbs 3:5–6 calls us to:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
– Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust requires us to surrender the need to understand everything, something I’ve personally struggled with. It means believing that God’s wisdom is greater than our own perspective and that His timing is better than our own. Faith is not built on having all the answers; it is built on knowing the character of the One who does.
This truth is beautifully echoed in Jeremiah 17:7–8:
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.”
– Jeremiah 17:7-8
I love this picture because it reminds me that trusting God does not prevent seasons of heat or drought. The tree still experiences difficult conditions, yet because its roots reach deep into the source of life, it remains steadfast, fruitful and full of life.
This is where I want to grow: I want my trust in God to become so deep that my roots are firmly established in Him. I want my confidence to shift away from trying to change or control my circumstances and rest securely in Him. I want to reach the place where my hope is no longer dependent on whether I receive the answer I want or on my preferred timing. Instead, I want it to rest in the unshakable truth that God is faithful, He is good, and He is always worthy of my trust.
Trusting the Promise Keeper
Perhaps one of the greatest invitations of the Christian life is this: not just to trust God’s promises, but to trust the God who made them.
It’s one thing to believe that God will fulfil His promises. It’s another to continue trusting Him when you don’t yet see how or when they will come to pass. Waiting has a way of revealing where our confidence truly lies. Is it in receiving what we’ve been praying for, or is it in the God who remains faithful regardless of the outcome?
As I have reflected on this, I have realised that God is inviting me to know Him more deeply, not just His promises. Promises reveal His heart, but His character is the foundation of our faith. He is faithful whether I understand His timing or not, and He is worthy of my trust whether I see immediate answers or continue to wait.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in YAH, the Lord, is everlasting strength.”
– Isaiah 26:3–4
Isaiah reminds us that God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are fixed on Him. The more we fix our eyes on His faithfulness instead of our fears, the more our hearts learn to rest. As we choose trust over fear, surrender over striving, and faith over uncertainty, we discover a peace that doesn’t depend on our circumstances but on the certainty that God is with us and will faithfully lead us, one step at a time.
Practical Ways to Grow in Trust
1. Spend time getting to know God and His character
Trust grows through relationship. As you read Scripture, you’ll discover God’s faithfulness, love, wisdom, and mercy. The more you know who He is, the easier it becomes to trust what He is doing.
“But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.”
– Jeremiah 9:24
2. Pray honestly and consistently
Bring every fear, disappointment, and unanswered question before God. Prayer helps us to draw near to the One who already knows the end from the beginning.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
– Philippians 4:6-7
3. Remember God’s faithfulness
David faced Goliath with confidence because he remembered that God had already delivered him from the lion and the bear. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls His people to remember what He has done. Looking back at God’s faithfulness gives us confidence to trust Him with what lies ahead.
“I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds.”
– Psalms 77:11-12
4. Be faithful with what God has entrusted to you today
Don’t wait for the next season before trusting Him. Honour Him in the small things, steward what is already in your hands, and trust that He is preparing you for what is to come.
“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.”
– Luke 16:10
5. Place your confidence in God, not in people
People can disappoint us, change their minds, or fail to meet our expectations. God never will.
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord.’”
– Jeremiah 17:5
Our hope was never meant to rest in another person. It is safest when it rests in Christ alone.
6. Turn anxiety into trust
Fear will come, but it doesn’t have to lead your life. Each anxious thought can become an invitation to trust God again.
“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?”
– Psalm 56:3–4
As you reflect on these words, my prayer is that you will be encouraged to trust God more deeply, even in seasons of waiting and uncertainty. Whatever your “hope deferred” may be, remember that God is faithful. He sees you, loves you, and is working, even when you cannot yet see it.
